How to take care of your skin in summer

How to take care of your skin in summer

Summer is upon us and it is at this time of year when we have to pay more attention to skin care, whether facial or body. There are many external factors that affect our skin and in some way our dermis, the most important of which are sunlight and high temperatures.

Sun exposure is, without a doubt, the most influential factor on our skin these days of relaxation and sun. Skin ageing, wrinkles, spots, dryness and even, in the long term, more serious diseases such as skin cancer, are some of the risks to which we are exposed during the summer and long exposure to the sun. For these reasons it is important that we know the impact of the sun's rays on our skin and what the different types of solar radiation are:

UVB: They act on the surface of the skin or epidermis, they are responsible for tanning, stimulating the production of melanin, but also for sunburn or erythema.

UVA: They penetrate to the dermis and are responsible for premature ageing or wrinkles, immunosuppression, and carcinogenesis, together with UVB.

INFRARED: They can reach the hypodermis, or deepest layer of the skin, and are responsible for the thermal effect or sensation of heat, as well as producing dehydration and increasing the negative effects of UV radiation.

10 TIPS TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN IN SUMMER

1 Use a good sunscreen

It is important that whenever we are exposed to the sun we use a good sunscreen. The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) indicates the sun protection index of the product. It is important to choose the most suitable sunscreen for our skin type (oily, dry, etc).

2 Sun exposure

It is recommended not to expose yourself to the sun in the central hours of the day (12 to 16 hours). It is advisable to practice outdoor sports activities either early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sun is not so intense.

3 Plenty of hydration

During the summer it is advisable to drink two litres of water a day, drinking regularly throughout the day, preferably between meals, to keep your body and skin perfectly hydrated, avoiding fizzy drinks as these are responsible for the appearance of cellulite and dehydration of the skin. Water will be your best ally!

4 A healthy diet

Fruit and vegetables are the best allies when it comes to establishing a healthy diet, avoiding sugars and ultra-processed or refined foods, as they can lead to premature ageing of the skin. We should avoid heavy and copious meals. Reduce the consumption of meat and prioritise foods rich in antioxidant vitamins such as A, C and E. Light, fresh meals such as salads, steamed vegetables, creams, etc. are more appetising, so make the most of them!

5 Facial cleansing

It is advisable to cleanse your face at least twice a day (morning and evening) with plenty of water, removing any impurities that may clog pores. In summer we sweat more, so it is easy for our pores to become clogged, and this can lead to an outbreak of acne. Always use gentle products that won't irritate your skin.

6 Exfoliation

In summer we should exfoliate our skin on both face and body to remove dead skin cells. It is advisable to exfoliate once a week.

7 Moisturising creams for both face and body

We must not forget to use our face moisturising creams both day and night. In summer, we should at least forget to apply our moisturising creams, as due to the exposure to the sun and the dryness of the environment, our skin requires a more special and delicate care. On the body, after sun exposure we should apply a good after-sun cream suitable for our skin type.

Moisturising creams for both face and skin allow us to recover the moisture lost during the day, as high temperatures make our skin much drier.

8 Lip protection

Lips have a very thin and delicate skin, so in summer it is advisable to keep them continuously moisturised and protected from the sun's rays. To do this we should use lip protectors with plenty of moisture.

9 Rinsing our skin after swimming

After swimming in the pool, it is advisable to rinse your skin with plenty of water to remove the remains of chlorine and avoid further drying of the skin. After swimming in the sea, it is also advisable to rinse the skin with fresh water, as this is another external element that is harmful to the health of our skin.

10 Keep an eye on your skin

This is the time of year when we should pay special attention to small spots and moles on our skin, paying special attention to moles that change shape, size, and colour.
